Make a Cheap Drawer Organizer from an Empty Cereal Box

We certainly love cheap around Lifehacker HQ, and this hack is about as cheap as it gets: instead of buying a drawer organizer, you could just cut up that old Lucky Charms box and let itorganize your office supplies instead.

Blogger Patricia Zapata, who does a lot of recycling projects, cooked up this repurposing hack with a cereal box and some craft paper to cover the outside pictures (it doesn’t need to be thatpretty, but the least you could do is hide that giant picture of Tony the Tiger). She even used some of the cardboard to create a divider, with which she could separate smaller objects (pens, paper clips) from larger ones (scissors, tape, stationary). It fit perfectly in her IKEA drawer, though you might have to make some adjustments—keep in mind there are many sized cereal boxes out there.

Convert Rafter Spaces into Book Shelves

You can never have enough storage space, especially if you’re a book lover. This clever hack turns the unused space between rafters into book shelves.

The design seen in the above photo is quite simple. The owners of the space took planks, painted them white to match the existing ceiling and rafters, and then affixed them with nails—long screws with aggressive threads would have been our choice, but we’re big on not getting crushed to death by our libraries. The clever use of spaces creates dozens of feet of “book shelf” storage where nothing but empty space existed before.

Stitch Together a Simple Organizer to Conquer Your Mail

This year, 2010—it’s the year you will not let bills pile up and junk mail overrun your desk. Grab some fabric, borrow a sewing machine, and craft a mail organizer for a door or wall in your house.

Unbleached fabric, a bit of thread, and cardstock are all you really need, plus the elastic or other gear to hang this horizontal mail organizer. The bright and blithe blog offers some suggested title cards for each of four pockets, and they’re pretty good concepts (“To be paid” and “Action required” seem a little redundant, perhaps), but you can easily make your own pocket covers if that design isn’t up your alley.

Use Gridwall to Organize Your Spaces

Pegboard is pretty awesome when it comes to organizing things but you can’t deny that it makes most people think of garages and workshops. If you want the versatility of pegboard without the garage-vibe, use grids.

Gridwalls are often seen in retail shops as a way of hanging a variety of goods for display. You can adopt the same use in your home, especially in areas like the kitchen where lots of small implements are routinely taken down for use. Instead using pegboard attachments you’d instead use S-hooks to hang pots, pans, and other accessories from the grid. Check out the ReadyMade article below to find a list of places you can buy grids or, if you’re feeling industrious, head down to your local hardware or concrete supplier and pick up some lightweight reinforcing grids. Hit them with some enamel spray paint for a cheap but polished looking grid set.

Sew your own storage baskets, this would be handy for under the bed storage as well, just add an additional flap of fabric to one side and velcro on the opposite.
